Yes, men and women are different when it comes to orgasm.
Women tend to bond around sex and orgasm due to the production of Oxytocin in the brain. After orgasm, Oxytocin (also known as "The Cuddle Drug") women float on cloud 9. We call our girlfriends and gush. We start picking out wedding gowns. We glow in the dark.
Men, on the other hand, have a tendency to behave in an opposite way. This partly explains why they don't call the next day.
Combine Oxytocin with Estrogen and the two walk hand in hand to the pleasure receptors in the brain. Now we are thinking of names for the future babies we are going to produce with this guy. If he ever calls again, that is.
Just like the addictive properties of the pharmaceutical grade Oxytocin used to mediate chronic, severe pain, give us an Oxytocin producing orgasm and we become Love Addicts, which explains one reeason we turn into raving manical biatches when the man does not call. We need another fix. We are in withdrawal. We need our Cuddle Drug!
If I may, here is some scientific, medical mumbo jumbo about women and Oxytocin. I have provided my own layman's TRANSLATIONS after each biochemical point. Men, take notes. It will help you understand some of our whack-a-doo moments:
1) Behavioral Effects: Oxytocin secreted from the pituitary gland cannot re-enter the brain because of the blood-brain barrier. Instead, the behavioral effects of oxytocin are thought to reflect release from centrally projecting oxytocin neurons, different from those that project to the pituitary gland. Oxytocin receptors are expressed by neurons in many parts of the brain and spinal cord, including the amygdala, ventromedial hypothalamus, septum and brainstem. TRANSLATION: Oxytocin is like oxygen. It goes everywhere. It makes us loopy, weak kneed and starry eyed. The part I wrote about us glowing in the dark? Well, that flushing and blushing reaction on our face that lasts for hours post orgasm are telegraphed to others. If you doubt what I am saying, put one of us under a black light and see what happens.
2) Sexual arousal: Oxytocin injected into the cerebrospinal fluid causes spontaneous erections in rats, reflecting actions in the hypothalamus and spinal cord. TRANSLATION: Guys, don't try this at home, either with rats or with yourselves.
3) Bonding: Oxytocin released into the brain of the female during sexual activity is important for forming a monogamous pair bond with her sexual partner. TRANSLATION: Give a woman an orgasm and she will be stuck like glue to you. Velcroed. Bonded. But combined with a personality disorder or psychosis or a man who does not bother to call the next day, it can turn the nicest of girls into stalkers.
4) Maternal behavior: Virgin female sheep show maternal behavior towards foreign lambs upon cerebrospinal fluid infusion of oxytocin, which they would not do otherwise. TRANSLATION: F**k our brains out and pregnant or not, we will start picking out baby names and knitting booties.
5) Increasing trust and reducing fear: In a risky investment game, experimental subjects given nasally administered oxytocin displayed "the highest level of trust" twice as often as the control group. Subjects who were told that they were interacting with a computer showed no such reaction, leading to the conclusion that oxytocin was not merely affecting risk-aversion. TRANSLATION: You give us an orgasm. We bond with you and trust you. We believe you when you say you will call us. You don't call. Our thoughts run wild. We get pissed. You get stalked.
6) Nasally administered oxytocin has also been reported to reduce fear, possibly by inhibiting the amygdala (which is thought to be responsible for fear responses). There is no conclusive evidence for access of oxytocin to the brain through intranasal administration, however. TRANSLATION: Guys, our nostrils are NOT sexual orifaces, so please keep your penises away from our noses.
7) Oxytocin affects generosity by increasing empathy during perspective taking: In a neuroeconomics experiment, intranasal oxytocin increased generosity in the Ultimatum Game by 80% but has no effect in the Dictator Game that measures altruism. TRANSLATION: After we get off, we will clean your house, wax your back, bathe your dog and raise the 84 illegitimate children you had by another woman.
8) According to some studies in animals, oxytocin inhibits the development of tolerance to various addictive drugs (opiates, cocaine, alcohol) and reduces withdrawal symptoms. TRANSLATION: All we need is great orgasm producing sex. That and a really good lip liner and a bitchin' pair of stilletos and we are good to go into rehab.
9) Certain learning and memory functions are impaired by centrally administered oxytocin: Also, systemic oxytocin administration can impair memory retrieval in certain aversive memory tasks. TRANSLATION: Damn...I can't remember what I was going to write here.
And yet...honestly, I no longer care! ;-)

Yes, oxytocin plays a major role in the modulation of female behaviors in reproduction, from lover bonding to child rearing, and everything in between ...
Very good translations. I took notes solemnly. - Re: Oxytocin: The Love/Addiction Drug of Orgasm in Womenposted on 05/15/2009
translation? yaya is a white girl, who lives in LA. When I told her what "yaya" means in chinese slang, she laughed hysterically, and love this name even more dearly....

I meant her layman's TRANSLATIONS of the scientific findings were quite hilarious and to the point. :-)
