- posted on 09/28/2007
Here is the english version
The Panther
His tired gaze -from passing endless bars-
has turned into a vacant stare which nothing holds.
To him there seem to be a thousand bars,
and out beyond these bars exists no world.
His supple gait, the smoothness of strong strides
that gently turn in ever smaller circles
perform a dance of strength, centered deep within
a will, stunned, but untamed, indomitable.
But sometimes the curtains of his eyelids part,
the pupils of his eyes dilate as images
of past encounters enter while through his limbs
a tension strains in silence
only to cease to be, to die within his heart.
Translated by Albert Ernest Flemming

It's really sad to observe caged wild animals... How cruel it is to cage wildness???
I recently watched "Planet Earth" (narrated by David Attenborough), of which one episode shows snow leopard 雪豹 from the Himalayas, chasing their prey on steep mountain slopes. The beauty, agility, speed, strength, mysteriousness of this mythical animal is simply breath-taking! Wild in the wild...in harmony with nature, at their best in their natural habitat...THAT is what those caged animals in the poem dream of but can not have.
Just like humans, too, imprisoned in the cage of modern life, losing their true nature.

WOA有点高高在外了,跳到笼子里去体会一下嘛 just like you always do, put yourself in other people's shoes. :)

That's exactly the answer to WOA's question.

behind the blandness and veil -
Fly, thought, on wings of gold;
go settle upon the slopes and the hills,
where, soft and mild, the sweet airs
of our native land smell fragrant!

ben ben, thanks. It's nice to see you and so many other like-minded people.
浮生, you feel that way because you have been successfully tamed by human civilization and can no longer hear the call of the wild, like most of us :)
rzp's Hebrew slaves are not tamed yet, so they are still moaning...even though the tune in their chorus is as heavy as 国际歌.

Greetings to ying.
Verdi's original tune may appear to be moaning, but it may not be heavy. There are many versions of it, the same music when sung differently, and heard by different ears, it conveys differently. Winged thoughts have set the restrained slaves free.

Fly, thought, on wings of gold :)

I guess I could say: but you weren't me, so how could you know whether I would or would not know what you may or may not know... heh heh.
But seriously, I AM a fish :)

Greetings. Yes, thank you. I enjoyed your comments, and especially like your "Winged thoughts have set the restrained slaves free."
For some reason, to me this piece always seems to contain the menacing presence of a dark, heavy force, mixed with an air of melancholy and nostalgia among other things, albeit mostly in the background, but still quite obvious and disturbing. I can almost hear the clanging of their chains. It is from these suffering bodies heavy with bondage that arises the free-flight freedom of their mind and spirit; and I can't separate one from the other two. After all, those golden winged thoughts, in the end, is to help "fortify us to endure our suffering..."
So, in brief, I hear from this piece a mixture of complex sentiments: a shimmer of light amid darkness, a glimmer of hope among despair, a brief relief from long-lasting pain/suffering, and the souring of the spirit/soul from the restrained body...
(As I'm writing this, it occurs to me that this certainly can be applied to the billions of the suffering multitude in our own country throughout the ages, as well as the enslaved Africans, both of whom suffered no less than the Hebrew slaves...and it's the same sparkle of the spirit that sustained them to endure, survive, and thrive. So, the connection to 国际歌.)
