I’ve read a heartbreaking story in a cafe where is part of facilities of the book centre this afternoon.
A winner of Pulitzer Prize, titled “Angela’s Ashes:A Memoir”,the autobiography written by Frank McCourt, who is a writing teacher himself in a high school, tells a story about how a poor Irish family lost their three childrens due to the poverty and the ignorance in those hard times when United States slumped in the Depression and the Ireland suffered from the dampness and the hatre of English..
The story was told from the vision belonged to the first kid of the family ,Frank McCourt himself..His father, the senior Malachy was looking for job all the time and couldn’t help to spend the sporadic wages on alcohoric drinks, despite of this irresponsible habit, he did love his five childrens ,especially the little lovely daughter who had blue eyes and curl hair.
During the days of Depression in United States, jobs were scarce and the family always suffered from hunger.Frank’s mother ,Angela ,who became a mother before became a woman ,was an inexperienced housewife raising five kids. She had to fight with her husband for the usage of his poor wages..Bread,milk,honey..all she thought about was to get some food back home and feed her kids..
Nonetheless, the miserable family had to face the dark destiny awaited for them already ..the first lost children was their deeply beloved angel, the little daughter, then Oliver, one of the twins, the last was the another one of the twins..they had gone one bye one, three children in total.
I haven’t finished the reading when I left the book centre, though It was really touching and captivating I still decided to put the book back on the rack.. I enjoyed the reading in the cafe and I would prefer come back here someday and finish the rest of the story without any distraction.
From my own opinion, it’s a book worthy of five stars

Any comment on the book itself or the english writing is heartedly welcome, especially those pointing out the errors of the english writing.
I am always a student here. - Re: 《Angela’s Ashes:A Memoir》by Frank McCourtposted on 07/23/2007
- Re: 《Angela’s Ashes:A Memoir》by Frank McCourtposted on 07/23/2007
i just want to know whether you have finished it or not now.:) - Re: 《Angela’s Ashes:A Memoir》by Frank McCourtposted on 07/23/2007
I bought the book back to home couple weeks after and finished the reading of it in a short time.:) - Re: 《Angela’s Ashes:A Memoir》by Frank McCourtposted on 07/31/2007
- Re: 《Angela’s Ashes:A Memoir》by Frank McCourtposted on 07/22/2009
Frank McCourt died, July 19, 2009. - Re: 《Angela’s Ashes:A Memoir》by Frank McCourtposted on 07/22/2009
- posted on 07/22/2009
A very good book indeed. John Williams wrote the music score for the movie.
Growing up during the great famine of the late 1950s and early 1960s in Anhui, I could certainly identify a lot of things in the book and relate them to my own experiences.
It hurts me a great deal seeing the good food go wasted every time we dine out in China. We could live without a lot of amenities such as computers and ipods, but we cannot live without food. Who is going to feed China and India? I hate even to think about that....:-) - posted on 07/22/2009
It pains me seeing people eat, let alone waste.

He died on July 19 in New York of meningitis (脑膜炎). He was 78 years old.

- posted on 07/23/2009
I love this book and its audio version, too. The author is a master of short sentences (not the types of George W Bush, though).
With regard to the truthfulness of the book, there are claims that the author's description of his childhood Irish city is inaccurate. See

I personally think the unflattering image of the city by the author "hurt the feelings" of the city dwellers and that's why they complain.
I also read (many years ago, so my memory is vague) that when the author went back to the city (to sign his books and such), one of his childhood playmates challenged him on one event in the book. Again, this playmate was not portrayed favorably in that particular story.
Overall I don't feel those alleged inaccuracies hurt the book.

- posted on 08/11/2009
Jeannette Walls
