修改了咖啡店的mision statement,请大家把这个文件发送到各种基金会赞助玛雅咖啡。希望今年咖啡店里更多的朋友来支持,这样咖啡店才能不断扩大它的影响力。
The Mission Statement of MayaCafe.com:
Founded by a community of international writers, artists and professionals in the United States, Maya cafe is a nonprofit organization providing intellectual discussions of Chinese Current events which serves to foster cultural grounding while living abroad.

Acting as advocates to assist China in opening her doors to the world, MayaCafe allows outsiders to become more familiar with Chinese ways, wishes, and interests in fostering a more united and complete world community.
MayaCafe.com is a united group of catalysts intellectuals, Poets, Musicians, Politicians, Athletes, Artists, Free-Thinkers and more. It proliferates ingenuity and peace and increases community awareness and involvement in the progress of China's democracy and it’s ongoing cultural renaissance.
Thus far, it is one of the most compelling groups among elite Chinese immigrants. We have created an open online discussion forum to a growing community of contributors who intend to make a difference to the world in which we live.
MayaCafe is a template for New Ideas. At the same time, it is a warm home of Wise Ideals from our Elders. These successes are not lost in today’s Youth, but reborn and germinating to empower the world.

I know there are some companies which can match your donation to noprofit organization, please check out your company. I am talking to my boss since my current company has this policy, but I need to find out if mayacafe can fit their standard.

Founded by a community of international writers, artists and professionals in the United States, Maya cafe is a nonprofit organization providing intellectual discussions of Chinese Current events which serves to foster cultural grounding while living abroad. Why is "Current" with a capital C?
"international writers ..." sounds to mean people with different cultural backgrounds, but "...while living abroad" seems to indicate only those overseas Chinese. Do you intend to only discuss "Chinese current events"? It seems people are more interested in many other things such as arts, literature, than only "Chinese current events".
This nurtures the free-thought process which allows the growth of the Chinese history, literature, culture, and Spirit of the elite Chinese community abroad as well as link to those intellectuals still inside China.
"This ..." is vague. Specifically what? the cafe, the discussion? What is the "history, literature, culture, and spirit" of a community? How do you grow them? Why is "Spirit" capitalized? "...allows the growth ..... as well as link to ..."? "still inside China"? Why "still"?
Acting as advocates to assist China in opening her doors to the world, MayaCafe allows outsiders to become more familiar with Chinese ways, wishes, and interests in fostering a more united and complete world community.
All discussions are almost entirely in Chinese. How do you allow "outsiders" to become more familiar with "Chinese ways..."? I assume outsiders are not Chinese speaking. Otherwise, I don't know what "outsider" means. What does a "more complete world community" mean? In what sense is the world not complete enough?
MayaCafe.com is a united group of catalysts intellectuals, Poets, Musicians, Politicians, Athletes, Artists, Free-Thinkers and more. It proliferates ingenuity and peace and increases community awareness and involvement in the progress of China's democracy and it’s ongoing cultural renaissance.
"catalysts intellectuals, Poets, Musicians,..." sounds funny to me. Why capitalize Poets, Musicians, etc? "community awareness...", what community? Chinese immigrants? "outsiders"? people in resident country?
Thus far, it is one of the most compelling groups among elite Chinese immigrants. We have created an open online discussion forum to a growing community of contributors who intend to make a difference to the world in which we live.
Here "make a difference to the world" sounds vague and hollow to me.
MayaCafe is a template for New Ideas. At the same time, it is a warm home of Wise Ideals from our Elders. These successes are not lost in today’s Youth, but reborn and germinating to empower the world.
Why are "New Ideas", "Wise Ideals" and "Elders" capitalized? indicating something specific? Again, "empower the world" sounds very vague and hollow. What do you mean by "empower"? in what sense, in what aspect?
Please partner with MayaCafe.com to help China open its doors to the world and allow outsiders become more familiar with Chinese ways, wishes and interests and help foster a better world community.
This paragraph sounds very much like the purpose is to promote cultural exchange, by introducing Chinese culture to "outsiders" not familiar with China, and western cultures to poeple inside China. But what I have seen so far is mostly a bounch of poeple talking about random things among themselves, serving little purpose to either China's opening its doors or cultural exchange. Again "better world community", vague and hollow. How do you make the world community "better"? in what way?
Sorry for playing devil's advocate here. But I just feel this writing is full of big fancy words conveying little useful information. After all, this is not the mission statement of the United Nations. To convince people to "grow with us", you need to let them know more specifically about your tangible goals and doable means. - Re: 感谢LM帮助设计MC V2,请大家直接键入mayacafe.composted on 01/30/2007

Guanzhong was right. Maya's draft provides a good starting point, but this mission statement does need some serious tuning.
For example, what are "compelling groups"? I have heard of "compelling evidence", "compelling arguments", but have never seen "compelling" being used to describe a group of people.
Also, capitalization is all over the places. Do all of them need upper cases?

Ok, I am just kidding.
It is good to point out problems, please 再接再厉, give out actual solutions, such as revised English sentences....etc.

Don't be mistaken. No intention to hurt anyone, Maya or anyone else who wrote this for her.
The issue is more than just the "English sentences" (that is the easy part). The question is what more specifically is the purpose of running such a forum. "enpower the world", make a "better" or "mroe complete world" are too vague, as I said. To promote cultural exchange is a good and tangible goal, but this is hardly what the forum is doing currently, unless it is intended to turn the forum toward that direction. The most tangible goal seems to introduce western culture to China, if the cafe has to have some noble goal. Otherwise, just to promote discussion regarding anything of interest to people here is a goal good enough for most of us here, although I wonder how the "outsiders" or the foundations will feel in terms of donation, which I assume is the purpose of this mission statement to start with. - posted on 01/30/2007
Okay. Let's get to the bottom of this. Why do we need such a statement in the first place? My guess is the purpose is two-fold. First is sort of to serve as a "charter" for Mayacafe as a nonprofit organization. This statement, along with other legal documents, will be used in the official business dealings of the cafe. Second purpose would be to serve as the primary "propaganda" vehicle for the cafe to attract more participants and donations and ultimately to establish its online prominence. Put another way, a marketing tool. If my guesswork is not way off, I would think the statement does not need to be very specific. As a matter of fact, some "intended vagueness" in the wording may best serve the Cafe's interests. In that spirit, I do agree the statement should be written in such a way open to general, liberal, and broad interpretation. (Though some of the hollow terms should be stripped.)
